Modeling Representative Volume Element (RVE) of 2D Random Elliptical Fiber Composites | Abaqus Plug-in : EngSoft_RandElli

Abaqus RVE random elliptical fiber composite

Overview of 2D RVE Modelling of Random Elliptical Fiber Composites

The Abaqus Plug-in for 2D RVE Modelling (EngSoft_RandElli) allows users to create two-dimensional (2D) representative volume elements (RVEs) with random elliptical inclusions or fibers in a rectangular matrix.
Moreover, it is designed for mesoscale modeling of concrete, wood-polymer composites, and other elliptical fiber-reinforced materials.

 Key Features of EngSoft_RandElli

  • Random Elliptical Particle Placement
The plug-in uses the Random Sequential Absorption (RSA) algorithm to place elliptical inclusions randomly.
As a result, the RVE has a realistic microstructure that suits composite modeling.
  • Variable Dimensions and Orientations
Users can set different aspect ratios, orientations, and size ranges for ellipses.
This allows flexible modeling for various composite designs.
  • Overlap Detection and Tolerance Control
The plug-in checks intersections between ellipses with a user-defined tolerance.
Consequently, high particle volume fractions are possible, and meshing is easier, even for complex geometries.
  • Boundary Periodicity Handling
When an ellipse crosses the RVE boundary, the plug-in automatically regenerates it on the opposite side.
Therefore, periodic geometry is maintained, ensuring accurate simulations.
  • Material Assignment and Orientation Definition
Each elliptical inclusion can have individual material properties and orientation angles.
Thus, users can achieve more customized and accurate microstructure representation.
  • Periodic Boundary Condition (PBC) Compatibility
After generating the RVE, users can apply Periodic Boundary Conditions (PBC) using the EngSoft_PBC2D plug-in.
In addition, this ensures fully periodic modeling for 2D analyses in Abaqus.

 Important Note

The maximum particle volume fraction depends on the ellipse aspect ratio.
For instance, large aspect ratios may prevent achieving very high volume fractions using RSA.
